Launching the Computer Center
David Mansingh of SHWET had a dream of establishing a computer center to train vulnerable girls coming from rural poverty who are destined, otherwise, to marry very young and live in uneducated isolation. He approached his micro credit partner, Prosperity Rings, for help in establishing the center. CEO and President Nancy Pasternak enlisted her Bellevue Rotary Club to fund the creation of the center with a $5,000 grant.
In the interest of professionalism toward the construction and completeness of the center, on-site IT experts in Trichy were enlisted to advise SHWET regarding the quality and economical availability of equipment. Seven quotations revealed the best provider and led to the purchase and installation of ten computers, state of the art software, internet access, and a printer. Members of the Rotary Club of Thiruvaiyaru stepped up to assure accountability of the project.
A grand inauguration of the Nancy Computer Center took place April 9, 2013. Of the girls admitted to the center as students, 60% have been recommended by Prosperity Rings borrowers who are all too familiar with poverty and a stunted life prospective. Currently, 45 girls are enrolled in the computer learning center, which has plans to train 80 students in the next academic year. These trainees, coming from families who would never have imagined or even wished to educate their daughters, will go on to win 100% employment.
Thank you David, Rotary, and Prosperity Rings.
